The diamond engagement ring is a tradition that dates back hundreds of years. Each diamond is truly unique, like a snowflake. Each piece of diamond rough is carefully examined and a unique cutting plan is designed to optimize all of its special characteristics. The first engagement ring reportedly, was given in 1477 by Archduke Maximillian to Mary of Burgundy and was worn on the fourth finger of the left hand due to the “vein of love” that was believed to run from that finger directly to the heart (Encyclopaedia Brittanica, 2008). Our knowledge of our vascular system has changed since then but the tradition has become entrenched in our modern culture.
